my unemployment among many other things results in my performing confusing searches- that is it would be interesting to map them in hindsight, but in any case i just discovered Thomas Moore today (even though the word Utopia -as with most of us probably- was part of my vocabulary before i could form a concept, let alone make any comparisons with society). thank you BrainyQuote.
in any case, hadn't updated this thing here a while, thought i'd pick up the washcloth, hehe.
so select quotes:
"like ships that have gone down at sea, when heaven was all tranquility"
"glory is fleeting but obscurity is forever"
"all that's bright must fade/the brightest still the fleetest/all that's sweet was made/but to be lost when sweetest"
"a friendship that like love is warm. a love like friendship steady"
"and the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers is always the first to be touch'd by the thorns"

what ticks you?

so obviously to put together a portfolio for the eca there's more behind the job than good skill. so you have to think of what makes you tick. (or what tickles you should i say?) this is by no means and exhaustive or even thought out, but it's a good start maybe.

the space between things and categories
loneliness, awkwardness, shame
spirals
boxes
the sea
memory
smells
mosaic
maps, mindmaps
dualities
people who look like animals
my old rooms
tacit knowledge, inference, plotholes
wordplay, scanning the dictionary/thesaurus
people's names (repeating people's names until they seem strange)
getting lost
gazes, eye contact, staring at strangers
public transport
letters, public letters, dead letters
unrequittedness, feeling irrelevant
non-love, something not substantial but existent- nuisance
medical drawings, botanical drawings
travel, no-places
teeth, hearts, footaches, twitching
half-sleep
dogs
sociograms

aaaaaand stop.

on a clear day

perhaps it's quite a while since i last shared quite personal thoughts in this here little white box, but if people are allowed to have -or believe they have had revelations (which i thoroughly believe they should)- i have had a revelation today, although these sometimes have the evanescent profoundness of water off a duck's back (come on admit it, inertia is what keeps the world going [in collaboration with other forces too]....).
maybe not just one.
1) wanting to always be smart is the stupidest thing people decide to do to themselves. life will always make sure you get your ration of cringeworthy stupidity. ALWAYS. and guess what. on occassion it's fun.
2) sarcasm. risky practice, it is... i love it, but after a talk with a good friend (who claimed his wisdom came from the wine he was having) i can say that too much of it does you wrong, it subtracts from charm rather than add to it. it alienates or at least intimidates possible willing and loving bodies.
3) walking barefoot through Edinburgh is possible and in fact wonderful -on a sunny day of course when the pavement has absorbed enough sun and happy pitter patter of euphoric dazzled Edinburghers.

"And if only we arrange our life according to that principle that counsels us that we must always hold to the difficult, then that which now seems the most alien will become what we most trust and find most faithful."

Yellow haired lad dressed as a pink bunny casually eating a yogurt while walking along South Clerk Street. Oh and also a perfectly ordinary chap suddenly dropping his head down towards the desk and sniffing his book very fervently in the library. I can't come up with more examples, but the emerging research question is: Where is this world going? Has anyone thought of stopping to ask for directions?
